About This Project
The first policy register of the Nautilus Insurance Company (predecessor of New York Life Insurance Company), covering policy numbers 5 through 1000, dating from December 24, 1845 through 1847. Of the first one thousand policies written by Nautilus, 339 were on the lives of enslaved persons, typically written for less than $500 for a term of one year. Each entry includes: policy number, date, applicant name and residence, name of the insured (including enslaved persons) with residence, age, and occupation, amount insured, premium, annual payment, term length and expiration date, and remarks. Company bookmarks marking pages with enslaved persons' policies have been left in place.
