Source: University Archives https://www.universityarchives.com/auction-lot/griffin-pullman-slave-bill-of-sale-1854_85C480985F Slavery [Lexington, KY], December 28, 1854 Griffin & Pullman Slave Bill of Sale, 1854 DS A slave bill of sale issued by the Griffin & Pullman slave-trading firm. 1p, measuring 7.5" x 11.75", [Lexington, Kentucky], dated December 28, 1854. Entitled "A Sale Bill of the negroes belonging to the Estate of John McLennan deceased made December 28th 1854." Recording the sale of approximately twenty slaves. The account is certified and signed at the conclusion by Thomas C. Griffin. With flattened folds. Toning, staining, and foxing throughout. Small hole from a minor area of ink burn. Very good overall. In 1849, the Kentucky Legislature inadvertently aided the slave trade with the repeal of the Non-Importation Act of 1833. The legislature also made it so that traders who had violated the 1833 Act would now be absolved from punishment. Slavery once again became an open trade in Kentucky, and it was not uncommon to see numerous newspaper advertisements of traders, such as Griffin & Pullman. By the end of 1858, it was said that there were as many slave dealers as there were mule traders.
